Gauhati
College
, one of the oldest institution of higher learning is
located at
North Guwahati
. The college was inaugurated by Devakanta Baruah, the
then Education Minister of Assam in the premises of
the Auni Ati Kamaldev Institution on the 4th
September, 1962 as a co-educational institute of
collegiate education and the foundation stone at the
permanent site was laid by him on the 24th
November, 1963.
At the initial stage, the college started
functioning from the Auni Ati Kamaldev Institution. On
the 9th December, 1966 the whole functions
of the college were shifted to its own building at its
present site.
Mr. Kukil Bezbaruah was the founder Principal
of the college for a brief stint while Mr. Manindra
Kumar Baruah was the full time permanent principal
under whose leadership, the college became a full
fledged instution.
Since its inception, the college has been
imparting higher education to a vast population
extending from
North Guwahati
to Rangia and Nalbari in the west, Mangaldoi in the
east and Guwahati in the south with the help of
dedicated and qualified teachers. They have
contributed a lot towards making it a premier
institute of higher education.

Vision
:
To impart quality education and to set a standard in the preservation,
creation and dissemination of knowledge through
teaching, learning, innovation and experiment so as to
enable the College to be recognised as an ideal
institution for its quality teaching.

Mission
:
To remove educational backwardness among the rural masses of North
Guwahati in particular and the vast adjacent areas in
general, and to provide them an access to Higher
Education, thereby giving them a social standing.

Aims
and objective :
“Education must aims not only at accumulation of knowledge, but also
must encourage students’ active participation in the
process of learning and acquisition in the values
necessary for responsible an active participation in
the community.”
Keeping this in view, the college has outlined the following aims and
objectives:

To impart quality education (as per G.U.
curriculum) with an emphasis on developing an alert
and inquisitive mind.

To develop awareness in the pride of our
rich cultural heritage and an independent mind capable
of assessing events as well as situations objectively,
as responsible citizens.

To arouse and channelise inborn talents
of each student through extra curricular activities
like games an sports, hobby, art and culture.

To meet the social, culture and economic
needs of the area through contribution to the solution
of local problems and promotion of inter community
relationship.

To provide a liberal and academically
sound education that will inspire and cultivate the
freedom of intellectual inquiry, expression of ideas
and tolerance of new as well as dissenting views.

To make North Gauhati College an ideal institution of higher learning
specially for the rural masses and provide them
opportunities to get educated in various aspects of
contemporary learning.
